Why coming to yoga during early labor may be a good idea… Read Lauren’s birth story!

So you’re getting close to your due date and feeling sluggish, more tired, crampy and the couch is looking really cozy… Well, you may wanna push yourself out the door to pregnancy yoga. One of my very regular students (twice a week) recently came to Thursday night class during her early stages of labor and had an amazing birth just a few hours after class! Read the details of her story below:
“Hi Keya, As you may have guessed since you didn’t see us at the partner class on Saturday, we’re pleased to have welcomed Caelan John Jennings to the world!! He was born on Friday Oct. 11 at 12:45 am, and it was quite the birth. We had a check-up on Thursday morning, and the doctor seemed to think he’d be inside for a while longer as I hadn’t made much progress in terms of dilation and effacement from the week before (was at 1 cm and about 50%). So I didn’t think too much about feeling minor cramps for most of the day–figured maybe if we were lucky it was the very early stages of pre-labor, but would last for quite a while. By the time I got home from yoga around 8, the cramps were starting to feel more like contractions, but it still wasn’t clear that labor was really starting. Had dinner, and then decided to call our doula to say we weren’t sure, but maybe he was on the way. Then we decided to try to get some sleep, but after about 5 minutes in bed it became clear that wasn’t happening. Got in the shower, had Jeremy call the doula again and tell her to come, at which point the contractions hit in full force. She arrived around 11 and after about 5 minutes declared it was time to go, which was a good call, because at that point, I must have been just about at transition. Made it to the hospital just in time–we were probably there less than an hour before he was born!
Despite the unexpected drama though, all went smoothly. We succeeded in having a fully natural birth, and he came out strong and healthy–though tiny, only 5 lbs 11 oz!!
Looking forward to introducing you to him at mama-baby yoga in a few weeks, once we’re all rested and recovered. In the meantime, here are a few pictures. We’re naturally quite enamored with how cute he is!
