Plan to Procrastinate! The Art of NON-Doing
By: Keya Nkonoki / December 27, 2012
And for many years, whenever it got to the part on non-doing, my face would contort in confusion: How can you possibly DO something by NOT DOING it?
Merry Merry! Happy Happy Holy Days Everybody!
I pray this holiday season is bringing you closer to friends, family and your lovely selves! I’ve been enjoying a couple of FREE-FLOWing days with my loved ones. It was a huge feat to pull myself away from my computer and not feel GUILTY, for replacing my pile of work with PLAY.
The payoff: I woke up this morning on Fiyaaah! Well rested, well played and revvvving to go tackle the day! Though, I had “procrastinated” over some of the projects on my list to complete before the new year, it was exactly this NON-DOING that has SPARKED a natural flow towards getting it DONE.
This reminded me of a quote from the TAO TE CHING: “In the pursuit of knowledge, every day something is added. In the practice of the Tao, everyday something is dropped. Less and less do you need to force things, until finally you arrive at non-action. When nothing is done, nothing is left undone. True mastery can be gained by letting things go their own way. It can’t be gained by interfering.”
I’m one of those people who has the AUDIO version of the TAO TE CHING in my iTunes library ON REPEAT. And for many years, whenever it got to the part on NON-DOING, my face would contort in confusion: How can you possibly DO something by NOT DOING it?
The key is understanding your own flow and then honoring your creative process. Before writing, I sometimes vacuum and clean up my apartment. Sometimes I need to dance, run or do yoga until I sweat. Sometimes I need to sing a heart felt song (a little off key) or take a power nap. When the PROJECT is really BIG, I may find myself procrastinating for a few days… shifting my attention to other things that require less energy OR taking more leisure time to chat it up with friends. All the while obsessing over: “YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD BE DOING… “ The reality is that somehow someway, the project gets completed, deadline is met and over and over again I have seen where– those SIDE-STEPPING PROCRASTINATIONS serve to SPARK, IGNITE and propel me closer to DOING the DAMN thing! LOL!
I’ve been writing a lot [in case you haven’t noticed 🙂 ], and with more writing comes more things to be written – and re-written! These type of deadlines are the perfect breeding ground for procrastination. Thank God I’m coming to terms with the idea that procrastination does NOT have to be bad for you. For creative types, multiple project jugglers, big idea streamers and the like – a little time spent NON-DOING – is sometimes the perfect recipe for getting it done.
