“I went to Keya’s prenatal yoga class every weekend from about 22 weeks until I gave birth. It was a fantastic way to give myself some time to focus on myself and my baby, keep my body healthy, prepare for the birth and, a bonus, meet other soon to be moms. Keya is a fantastic teacher, has the most amazing energy and is wonderfully inclusive. I felt really lucky to have found her – her class made my pregnancy so enjoyable and I actually went to her Baby and Me Yoga class the second I was cleared by the doctor. My husband and I also attended her birthing Partners At Om PLAYSHOP, which was a few hours of breathing, stretching, massage techniques for both of us to use during the labor process. We both found it really fun, and incredibly helpful. No one can prepare you for birth, but we used the techniques and it allowed us to stay calm, centered and focused during what could be a very stressful time. Can’t say enough positive things about Keya and her class, and I am excited to see her every week during my next pregnancy.”
“I first met Keya at prenatal yoga class. Keya’s class became a place I felt special as an expectant mom by being surrounded by other pregnant women with Keya helping us find our breath and our strength. I loved Keya’s calming presence and loving spirit. After one of her classes she offered a two session birthing prep class for couples. I signed up. The class was great and made us want Keya’s support even more. I began to realize and visualize what a doula was and I knew that while I wanted to give birth in a hospital and was open to an epidural and intervention, I also knew having a calming, encouraging presence like Keya would help my birth experience and boy was I right! I’m glad I trusted my initial instinct because pregnancy is so unknown and you wonder if you will end up with a c-section. But I learned that you have to trust your instincts and your body. Thanks to a wonderful doctor, nurse and Keya I was able to have a birth experience I am proud of. I did get to the hospital only 1 cm dilated so there was some tension, stress and anxiety and five options to get my labor started. But once it was started and once Keya arrived her energy changed the mood in the room and my husband and I were able to trust we would see our daughter soon and I feel I was able to get her out much quicker thanks to this confidence. Everything Keya did was a warm and welcoming pleasant surprise that relaxed me and allowed me to labor easily. I could tell even the baby was moving and understanding and trusting.
I am filled with gratitude to Keya for supporting me and my husband and my baby girl through her delivery. I would not hesitate to recommend her, Keya Nkonoki is worth her weight in gold.”
“One of the best things about my pregnancy experience was all the yoga and workshops that I did with Keya. I am so thankful for Keya’s support and guidance, and especially for her amazing prenatal yoga classes, which truly prepared my mind and body throughout my pregnancy! My doctors and nurses kept complimenting me and my husband for how calm and prepared we were for managing pain and for pushing. It was so much more peaceful and relaxed than I ever could have imagined because I kept remembering all the advice to breathe and to keep my shoulders and jaw relaxed. Ultimately the contractions were relentless and were back to back, so I did the epidural, but all that pelvic floor work paid off because it took less than an hour to push. Pretty good for a first time mama!I’m also so glad we took the opportunity to arrange a private pregnant Partner At Om PLAYSHOP because it was such a special experience. My husband and I both had so much fun despite it being my husband’s first time ever doing yoga. Keya walked us through so many techniques, but I especially loved the rebozo scarf. We had a fun time practicing exercises we could do together, but the tips for managing early labor helped us tremendously when it came time for the real deal. The breathing exercises got me through some pretty intense contractions! The best part by far was how my husband and I got to connect during the workshop. It got us started on a dialogue about what we need from each other and it truly helped us to be a team during labor. Thank you so much, Keya!”
“Keya was both my doula for the birth of my first child 8 days ago, as well as my prenatal yoga teacher in Mar Vista (which is how I initially met her). I also took her Partners At Om PLAYSHOP! She is a luminous person, incredibly talented doula, engaging educator, and just an overall badass. I took Keya’s prenatal yoga class starting at my 18th week of pregnancy through my due date and loved her teaching style – every class was different and she would put together yoga sequences on the fly depending on the feedback of the class. She also cultivated community amongst the mamas in the class that I found very valuable and reassuring. As a doula, Keya was a critical part of the success of my baby’s birth. My 18 hour labor was incredibly painful for multiple reasons, including having a very large baby. I was also committed to delivering my child naturally. I truly could not have navigated the contractions without Keya’s guidance and coaching. She is a pain shaman. I was able to get through the most painful experience of my life without drugs because of her skills. Also, my labor would have been longer if not for her carefully working in tandem with my midwife to understand the progression of the baby’s movement downward as well as my dilation, and strategizing labor positions and exercises to help keep my labor progressing. Coming away from my birth with both a healthy, happy baby AND the feeling of empowerment and satisfaction of giving birth on my own terms is everything to me; a completely transformative experience. I’m so grateful to Keya and I recommend her passionately!”
“This is a review for Keya’s prenatal yoga class and Keya’s Partners At Om PLAYSHOP. I started going to Keya’s prenatal yoga class from the 1st trimester onwards. I was specifically looking to do prenatal yoga and after looking at Yelp reviews I signed up for the prenatal yoga with Keya once a week. I think that was one of the best decisions I made during the entire course of my pregnancy. The prenatal yoga classes were just what you want for your pregnancy. The pace and poses will not tire you out and yet at the end of the class you feel your body has had a good work out. I remember most of us in the class kept continuing up until the final trimester. There were those who were there in the 38th and 39th week. There is a positive vibe in the class and you feel especially connected to your baby and with all the other expecting moms and their babies. I have also been able to connect with other moms in the class (even after my delivery) and this would have otherwise been difficult for me as I work from home. My husband and I went to Keya’s Partners At Om PLAYSHOP and it was a rewarding experience. I would definitely recommend all expecting moms to sign up for this. We decided on not having a doula for the birth of our child. We had decided on delivering our baby at the hospital with the help of a OB-GYN and for us, Keya’s workshop and inputs were invaluable. The playshop is designed to help pregnant moms and their partners on preparing oneself for birth and delivery, learning exercises during contractions and different breath techniques during delivery. The icing on the cake is a very informative Q&A session. Keya comes with tons of experience in this field and she definitely knows the system well (Hospitals – Pros and Cons, Induction procedures that hospitals will generally recommend pros and cons for them, Self Advocacy, etc). This information is extremely useful if you would like to do your own research and advocate for yourself once you are in the hospital. In our case too, we weren’t happy about our obstetrician, so she helped us find another one in a different hospital and we were happy with the new obstetrician. I was induced for labor and from being 0 cm dilated and 0% effaced, I went into 10 cm dilation and 100% effaced in 8 hours with just Cervidil. The hospital staff believed I was only in early labor (when in reality I was in active labor) and was strongly recommending Morphine to help me with pain management. Apparently Morphine is a respiratory inhibitor and you don’t want that in the baby when he/she comes out so it’s usually given during early labor as it has a short shelf life. We really did not want the morphine because of its effect on the baby. They pushed it really hard, but I was insistent on not taking it in spite of the excruciating pain. Also, while I was going through the crazy pain in the hospital, the only thing that kept me going forward was the breathing exercises and the hip squeeze (that we learned from Keya’s workshop) that my husband would do for me for every contraction which was for the whole 8 hours of my labor. I managed the pain one contraction at a time and thanks to that I was able to say NO to morphine and eventually could manage the labor without the epidural (though I really wanted it)! Thank you Keya from me, my husband and our little one for all the help you have given us. This is my first ever Yelp review but totally worth it for anyone who would need Keya’s help just like I did! Absolutely recommend!”
“Really great experience! The couples yoga was a treat and not something we have ever done before. To be honest, my husband thought it was going to be super long and boring, but he ended up enjoying it a lot. We plan to use the Lunging (together), rebozo scarf, hip squeeze, tailbone push, ball rolling, and heating pad for our labors. We had a small flood in our house before the workshop, so we came into the class frazzled, but were pretty happy and connected by the end of it. Everything that was presented was really valuable!”
“It was so great! Very nice to be around other pregnant couples second time around and to do something new as a couple. Pretty much all of the comfort techniques and tips were helpful! It inspired me to use the ball more at home and to think about what foods to stock up at home on for labor. We both enjoyed doing the yoga portion together. Andrew asked if you do any couples yoga classes? He would love to do more yoga and he liked doing it with me and in a way were we got to connect with each other too. We could obviously go to any yoga class together but you would be great at teaching a special couples yoga class for both pregnancy/post pregnancy we would go!”
“My husband and I went to Keya’s Partners At Om PLAYSHOP about a month ago, and it was absolutely amazing!!! Keya is a real professional who explains everything in a simple way, makes everyone feel comfortable adapting exercises and answering all the questions. Keya has a lot of experience, so she explained all of our questions and concerns regarding birth preparation, delivery, pair exercises during contractions, breath techniques during delivery, etc. As she worked as a doula in many places she gave all the couples useful feedback and recommendations about birth places they chose for delivery. In our case we weren’t happy about our obstetrician, so she helped us with another one in the same hospital and now we are super happy with the new one! Moreover, Keya is such a positive-energy person that there are no chances you won’t like her classes (including partners!) or leave them with doubts. She promises 100% but gives you 1000%! It’s a pity I found Keya just now, I wish I find her on my 1st-2nd trimester to have a chance to visit more yoga classes and workshops with her. Thank you, Keya, from me and my husband for such a fantastic experience! Absolutely recommend!”
“We Loved the PLAYSHOP! It was a perfect balance between practical theory and fun. We have been to another labor class which we didn’t enjoy very much – it felt outdated and out of touch. Your class was really informative about the stages of labor, exactly what happens and useful tips on how to cope. You gave really helpful advice and guidance to partners in a way that was inclusive and showed just how important and influential that support role is. We also both really enjoyed all the great massage and comfort tips – especially the one with the rebozo sheet. I’m very lucky to have a supportive and engaged husband. The other labor class we attended treated the partners like they were clueless and a bit useless. It didn’t speak to how we are as a couple. We walked away from your class feeling even more connected and like a strong team.”
“We loved the Partners At Om Playshop! I think my husband Evan was a little uncertain about coming since we’d already done a childbirth prep class at UCLA Santa Monica, but afterwards he said that he loved it and thought it was more fun and informative than the hospital class. We plan to use the “birth cave” meditation, assisted lunges, birthing ball techniques, hip pressure, and rebozo sifting. It felt great to move in sync with one another, especially with our due date so soon on the horizon.”
What if you played this soundtrack every day as you cuddled with the baby feeling peaceful and joyful? Do you think the baby would remember these sounds, and feelings of joy if you played the same soundtrack during your labor and delivery?
